Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera / यह जो देस है तेरा (from Swades)

Yeh jo des hai tera
swades hai tera
tujhe hai pukara
yeh woh bandhan hai
jo kabhi toot nahin sakta

yeh jo des hai tera
swades hai tera
tujhe hai pukara
yeh woh bandhan hai
jo kabhi toot nahin sakta

mitti ki hai jo khushbhoo
tu kaise bhoolayega
tu chaahe kahin jaaye
tu laut ke aayega
nayi nayi raahon mein
dabbi dabbi aahon mein
khoye khoye dil se tere
koi yeh kahega

yeh jo des hai tera
swades hai tera
tujhe hai pukara
yeh woh bandhan hai
jo kabhi toot nahin sakta

tujhse zindagi hai yeh kahe rahi
sabh to paa liya abh hai kya kami
yunh to saare sukh hai barse
par door tu hai apne ghar se
aa laut chal tu abh deewanae
jahan koi to tujhe apna maane
awaaz de tujhe bulaane wahi des

yeh jo des hai tera
swades hai tera
tujhe hai pukara
yeh woh bandhan hai
jo kabhi toot nahin sakta

yeh pal hai wahi
jis mein hai chuupi
koi ek saadi, saari zindagi
tu na pooch raaste mein kaahe
aaye hain is tarha do raahein
tu hi to hai raah jo sujhaye
tu hi to hai abh to jo yeh bataye
chaahe to kis disha mein jaaye wahi des

yeh jo des hai tera
swades hai tera
tujhe hai pukara
yeh woh bandhan hai
jo kabhi toot nahin sakta

Hi,

I heard this song on the radio this independence day (15th Aug)while travelling and the whole day, I kept humminng it .

I downloaded the song and heard it a million and half times .I was so captivated by its lyrics that I googled to find more about it and hence reached here.

It's nice to see it on your page and it was a nice thing to see an american writing about hindi songs.

This song is a gem .
Thanks for sharing

Thanks for your comment, it means a lot to me to find other people who love this music, too. Yeh Jo Desh Hai Tera still brings tears to my eyes, just as Vande Mataram does, even though I've listened to it several times a week for a year.

During the Independence Day holiday long weekend, the song lyrics on these pages got about four times their normal number of visits each day. About half the visits were from India, with the remainder from all around the globe -- the desi diaspora.

Thanks for your visit.

Dear Atul

I'm very moved by how heartfelt your words are -- it fits with the feelings of everyone else who has commented about this song. I hope a sense of everyone's reactions to Ye Jo Des Hai Tera is picked up by Rehman, somehow, someway.

Hi-
My Mum and I came across this website whilst searching for images to do with the film Swades. "Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera" never ever fails to make the hairs on our skin stand on end- the music and the lyrics are truly incredible. As a British born Indian (my Mum being born in India) the song means a lot to both of us. It also makes us sad however to think, in keeping with the lyrics of the song, that even though India and her soil welcome such diverse cultures, religions and people, it is still abused through religious and political conflict. We hope that the years ahead for India will include an economic rise that is mindful of socioeconomic and environmental issues, and a prospect of peaceful living.

i Totally agree with the commenters here ... one of the most moving songs to come in the last decade or more .... a gem in many ways .... it invokes emotions very few song can do .... other examples are "mere watan ke logo", No more turning by Pink Floyd and 'ne maJasi ne ... saagaraa praaN taLamaLalaa' by the mageshkars (Song dedicated to Swatntra Veer Savarkar)

Also Its amazing sum1 not born in india understands the emotions of this song ... keep it up

The d and rd sounds in Hindi and Urdu sound very similar to the native-English-speaking ear. Thus, स्वदेस can be rendered in English characters as either swades or swardes.

Swades is the most common rendering, however, and as the movie is titled Swades in all its English distribution materials, perhaps swades is the best spelling to use. But again, both spellings are correct, in English.

This is a wonderful song, very touching lyrics and very good music by AR Rehman. ARR has given everything to the song. I am sure he would have got equally impressed with this song.

This songs gives a special feeling when ever I listen. It makes we wonder that as human being my life is previliged and I need to do something really big for the less preveliged. I have that real feel of enthusiasm to do something big for my lovely country. I am sure I will dedicate some portion of my working life to a big change/social cause.
